I'm very influenced by Music. My painting "Jungle Witch" is named after a neo-exotica song with the same name performed by "Clouseaux" from their album "Beyond Good and Evil". The tune is a slow build of soft exotica raising to hot jazz, ending with a blazing electric guitar. A mysterious & exotic composition that moved me to "create".

Jungle Witch represents transformation. Land to Ocean. Night to Day. Cool colors to warm colors. A taste of Lovecraftian transmogrification as a Gothic styled wahine changes into a sea-creature.

In her hands Jungle Witch transforms an ancient tiki( this one based on a real TIKI that was found buried in the mud on Maui and now resides in the British Museum - it was possibly a discarded temple post )- the old Tiki becomes the modern day "Tiki-Mug".  Old world gods of creation become the modern day gods of recreation.

In the background, we see hints not of Hawaii but of Rapa Nui ( Easter Island ). A few large Moai ( Stone Heads ) as well as one of my favorite of all Tikis; the long-eared Tiki found only in one place on earth; an extinct volcanic crater on Rapa Nui. I painted him ready to go surfing but his exact meaning is lost to the ages, like much of the mysterious history of Rapa Nui - that most mysterious & exotic island.

When I painted "Tiki Cat" I set out to paint the ultimate "low-brow" or "kitschy" piece of "Hawaiiana Tiki-Art".

Research showed the first art pieces called "kitsch" were made in Munich Germany in the 1860's - 1870's. One of the earliest is a lithograph by Frederick Dielman called "The Widow", it depicts a cat wearing a ruffled collar. The Idea for "Tiki Cat" was born: A cat …wearing an Aloha Shirt, playing the ukulele, standing on Waikiki beach, diamond head in the sunset colored background.  A Tiki-Mug / exotic-tropical-drink before it, and a jungle-green lighted Tiki behind it. "Tiki Cat's" posed in a classical composition. I carefully figured out glamorous Hollywood lighting. Then came the hardest part - the months of slow exact rendering down to every whisker and grain of sand. I wanted this cartoon character to be as perfectly rendered as I could manage. Time was no object. Dollar per hour was not a consideration… much to my agent's horror. All that mattered was that this was going to be an important painting. The best "souvenir - tourist - Hawaiiana Tiki-Art" I could possibly make. Ten to 14 hours a day, I toiled… for days… for weeks… Three months later I was still painting.

One morning I got up… stumbled into the studio… looked at the cartoon cat still unfinished... and I was overcome by a wave of cold fear.

"What am I doing?" I gasped.

It's just a picture of a cartoon cat… and I'm spending my whole life painting it.

    "This is crazy!" I muttered.

I stared at the cat. It was strange, bizarre, but beautiful… Then it struck me. If this piece of art scares me, then it must have risen from mere "tourist kitsch" to the lofty realm of "Real Fine Art". Like it, or hate it, this cat was so exactly rendered you could not help but stare at it.

    "It's just a cartoon.. but it's ART!"

This is the essence of "Low-Brow Art". Happily, I picked up the brush and one month later I was finally done.

This painting is my best selling image. I can well imagine that long after I am gone "Tiki Cat" will still be selling in tourist shops all over Hawaii, just as I had hoped. I had touched the mutual fabric of our Hawaiian tourist/souvenir pop-culture" … if I'm lucky, maybe forever.

Side note; on close inspection you see a faint "death head skull" in Tiki Cat's eye. Why? My own cat saw herself as the "Alpha Predator", aka the "Killer Jungle Queen of her Paradise". Thus in all house cat's eyes, if you look close… in it is a reflection of that ancestor of the deadly jungle hunter. It's in a cat's nature. Robert Williams ( the father of Low-Brow Art ) once said; "All that is keeping you from being lunch for the sweetest house cat is your size."

"Originally 'The Werewolf of Waikiki' was painted to be in a series of four famous movie monsters, ( Dracula, Frankenstein, the creature, and the wolf-man ) each one portrayed on vacation in Hawaii. The monsters were revealed to the public at large group-show about "Kitsch Art" at La Luz de Jesus Gallery. La Luz is the world-famous birthplace of a hyper-cartoon art movement known as "Low-Brow" or "Conceptual Realism". The monster paintings all sold opening night, and went on to become a set of the most absurdly unlikely Post-Cards from Hawaii ever seen. What started as an under-ground performance-art project, turned into very popular selling souvenir items. "The Werewolf of Waikiki" was also reproduced as a cover of a faux vintage comic book called "Tales from the Tiki Lounge" printed was a collectible cover of a 16-page pull-out booklet of Brad Parker's low-brow art in a special issue of "KUSTOM" magazine in France." - Brad Parker

I'm a big fan of the actor, Béla Lugosi.

Béla Lugosi became world famous in the 1930's with his role of Dracula on stage and film.

However, in 1932 he starred in an American pre-code horror film: "White Zombie" that was even better.

In "White Zombie" Béla Lugosi stars as "Murder Legendre" Voo-Doo master who rules a tropical island with his legion of zombies.

Almost a century later, Bela Lugosi's supremely dark charisma reaches out from this black & white film and mesmerizes you with eyes behind heavy, silent-film style make-up, with wickedly arched eyebrows.

"White Zombie" features imaginative visual story-telling techniques. The first zombie film ever made. The first film to portray non-stereotyped black characters. A milestone horror film-making that influences horror films right up to today.

A ZOMBIE is an animated dead-man.

But, it's also a popular tropical drink.

This painting explores Béla Lugosi as a Tiki-Bar proprietor who is the Master of (both kinds) of ZOMBIES.

This is the only painting I did that I was told "its eyes follow you around the room" - and a guest could not sleep in the same room as the original.

I painted this for a local Mai Tai Festival in Kailua-Kona Hawaii, yet it has still not yet been used for that promotional purpose.

In 2014, the painting traveled to show at Strychnin Gallery in Berlin, Germany where it was unveiled in a mod Tiki Art Show with many other big name artist's works.

However, it didn't sell and even though the gallery requested that they hold onto it for an additional amount of time to display it, it never sold there.

When the painting arrived back in Hawaii it had been a few months since I had laid eyes on it. One look and I knew exactly what needed to be done to it. To make it really "FINISHED".

I put brush to canvas again, and I created the super high glossy chrome look to the living Mai Tai.

That chrome look was made famous in underground comics by Robert Williams, the father of "Lowbrow Art".

Sporting his new, Lowbrow comic, very shiny look, Mister Mai Tai sold instantly when he was next revealed to the public.
