The Priestess of DAGON:
A large and complex painting depicts a high priestess of an old sea god known as DAGON. Dagon, the fish-god, resides in the brilliant literary work of American master of “Weird Tales” H. P. Lovecraft whose work in the 1920’s changed horror fiction forever. Beyond this pop cultural reference, Dagon was also a fish-god in actual ancient Mesopotamia.
The Priestess looks out between flora nearly swimming with sea-life, while in the back ground a Tiki Lounge is guarded by two uniquely aquatic looking Tikis.
There are many things I enjoy about this piece, one of them being the spectacular sky adorned with a decidedly comic-book drama I rarely come close to re-creating in many other pieces.
This piece is adorned with acrylic painted, tiki coconuts set inside of a custom built, shadow box frame made by Big Island artist, Joshua Spahr.
The carefully painted coconut border is an excellent element raising the piece to place of near mysterious, religious iconography.
